Per Federal Orders: Face Coverings Required on Airport Property; Failure to Comply May Result in Removal from Airport and Federal Penalties
On January 21, 2021, President Joseph Biden issued the Executive Order on Promoting COVID-19 Safety in Domestic and International Travel, which directed federal leaders to take immediate action requiring face masks in airports and on commercial aircraft. On January 29, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an Order mandating masks. On January 31, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) issued a Security Directive outlining requirements for airport operators and explaining how the president’s Executive Order and the CDC Order will be enforced. The TSA updated the Security Directive to state it applies to all individuals, including those who are vaccinated.
All workers, customers, and visitors must wear a face covering while in Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) or on airport grounds. Failure to comply may result in individuals being removed from the airport and denied re-entry. Additionally, those found in violation may be subject to federal penalties.
DTW has free masks available in dispensers located in the ticket lobby of the McNamara and North Terminals. The CDC and TSA now define masks as “material covering the nose and mouth of the wearer, excluding face shields.”
There are limited exceptions to the face covering requirement including children under 2; those who are communicating with someone who is deaf or hard of hearing; and those who are eating, drinking, or taking oral medications for brief periods. A face covering may temporarily be removed for identity verification if requested by a TSA, gate or ticket agent or any law enforcement officer.
